PokerStars is an online poker cardroom owned by The Stars Group. It can be accessed through downloadable poker clients for the Windows, macOS, Android and iOS. It is the largest real money online poker site in the world, [1] controlling over two-thirds of the total online poker market. [2][3][4]
A online satellite tournament produced the 2003 World Series of Poker (WSOP)[5] champion, Chris Moneymaker. As the first person to become a world champion by qualifying at an online poker site, [6] Moneymaker’s 2003 win was an important factor in catalyzing the poker boom of the mid-2000s. The press has called this the “Moneymaker effect. “[7]
History[edit]
PokerStars launched its beta play-money-only site on September 11, 2001. The company began offering real money wagering on December 12, 2001. PokerStars was originally a Costa Rican company, Rational Enterprises, which was majority owned by the Israeli Scheinberg family. [8][9] The company was subsequently moved to Onchan, Isle of Man. The move was driven by the establishment of a 0% corporate tax rate and the removal of rules barring companies from accepting casino and poker bets from the United States. [8] PokerStars holds numerous licences in other jurisdictions (see Regulated Markets below). In February 2012, PokerStars acquired a European Union license granted by the Malta Lotteries and Gaming Commission. [10]
While privately owned, PokerStars had been the subject of financial media speculation regarding a possible initial public offering or merger with a publicly listed company. Analysts estimated its market value would have been approximately US$2 billion in 2006, which would have made the company one of the world’s largest privately held gambling companies. [9] PokerStars overtook PartyPoker as the world’s largest online poker room after the U. S. Congress passed the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006. Many sites, including PartyPoker, immediately suspended business with U. gamblers, while others, including PokerStars, did not. [11]
In December 2009, PokerStars set the world record for the biggest online tournament. The tournament entry fee was $1, and the number of entrants reached 149, 196. [12] They broke that record in December 2011, when 200, 000 players played in a $1 buy-in tournament with a first prize of $50, 000. [13] PokerStars was so busy during the early stages of the tournament, all tournaments had to be stopped for 20 minutes because the heavy traffic crashed their servers. This record had been broken again in June 2013, with 225, 000 participants. The buy-in was $1 and went completely into the prize pool, with no rake.
In January 2012, PokerStars introduced a downloadable mobile client for iOS from iTunes. In February 2012, the company also introduced a client for Android. [14]
In July 2012, PokerStars bought its former competitor, Full Tilt Poker. [15] The $731 million deal settled a civil lawsuit with the Department of Justice while giving ownership of Full Tilt Poker’s assets to PokerStars. [16]
In June 2014, The Stars Group, then known as Amaya Inc, agreed to buy PokerStars and its parent company for $4. 9 billion in cash. [17][18] The deal was completed on August 1, 2014. [19]
As of April 2016, they have reached an agreement with Netent to add desktop and mobile gambling games to its poker lobby in New Jersey and other locations. [20]
In February 2017, Microgaming announced a partnership with PokerStars, owned by parent company for the integration of its Quickfire platform. [21]
In July 2017, PokerStars agreed to a deal with bankruptcy administrators to acquire some of rival ‘s assets and in doing so will reimburse 60, 000 PKR players 100% of their final balances. [22][23]
In December 2017, PokerStars unveiled a brand new player tournament called the PokerStars Players No Limit Hold’em Championship, which is to be held in January 2019. The tournament is expected to become one of the biggest events in the annual poker calendar with a twenty-five thousand dollar buy in and a $1 million bonus for the eventual winner. [24][25]
In March 2018, The Stars Group reached an agreement with gaming company Sugal & Damani to support the launch of its PokerStars brand in India. [26]
In September 2018, PokerStars revealed PokerStars VR, a fully immersive virtual reality poker experience. [27]
In 2019, PokerStars agreed with Paddy Power Betfair to create the world’s largest gambling and betting companies. [28]
Games[edit]
PokerStars offers multiple poker variations: Texas hold ’em, Omaha, Omaha Hi/Lo (8 or Better), Courchevel, Stud, Stud Hi/Lo (8 or Better), Razz, Five-card draw, 2-7 Triple Draw & 2-7 Single Draw, Badugi, HORSE, HOSE, Mixed Hold’em, Mixed Omaha Hi/Lo, Triple Stud and 8-Game Mix. PokerStars also offers “Mixed Games, ” which rotate through several of these games. [29]
PokerStars averages over 15, 000 players playing real money cash games daily. [30]
PokerStars launched Zoom Poker in March 2012, with an official launch in May 2012. Zoom Poker is a fast fold ring game poker format where opponents change after every hand. The aim of Zoom poker is to offer players more hands of poker than in a regular ring game. [31] In January 2013 PokerStars rolled out Zoom Poker Tournaments due to popular demand for the fast fold variant [32]
Online tournaments[edit]
The site’s weekly Sunday Million tournament has a guaranteed $1 million prize pool and a $215 buy-in. The Sunday Million is the biggest weekly online poker tournament. On March 7, 2011, The 5th Anniversary Sunday Million broke records, with 59, 128 players creating a total prize pool of $11, 825, 600. [33]
World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP) has been running since 2002 and is regarded[by whom? ] as the online equivalent of the World Series of Poker. The WCOOP tournament series is the largest online poker series and pays out the largest prizes in online poker. The WCOOP 2010 Main Event champion Tyson “POTTERPOKER” Marks won $2. 2 Million, the largest online tournament prize in history. [34]
Spring Championship of Online Poker (SCOOP) was established in 2009 and has since become the most popular online tournament series. [35] Unlike WCOOP, there are three different buy-in stakes in the SCOOP events: Low, Medium (10x Low stake) and High (100x Low stake).
Micro Millions was launched in March 2012 as a tournament series designed for recreational and micro-stakes players offering a low buy-in tournament schedule and large guaranteed cash prizes. PokerStars guaranteed $5 million in prize pools for the second installment of MicroMillions. [36]
In 2014 PokerStars was hosting 500, 000 online tournaments each day. [37]
Live poker tours[edit]
PokerStars sponsors various live poker tours such as the European Poker Tour (EPT), Asia Pacific Poker Tour (APPT), Latin American Poker Tour (LAPT), UK and Ireland Poker Tour (UKIPT), Estrellas Poker Tour (ESPT), Eureka Poker Tour, Italian Poker Tour (IPT), Czech-Slovak Poker Tour (CSPT), Australia & New Zealand Poker Tour (ANZPT), France Poker Series (FPS), Belgian Poker Series (BPS), Russian Poker Series (RPS) and Brazilian Series of Poker (BSOP).
PokerStars also sponsors the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure (PCA). Since it started in 2004 the PCA has grown into the biggest poker event outside of Las Vegas. [38]
Concerning the APPT events, Stanley Choi has acquired the right to operate land-based live events and poker rooms under the branding of PokerStars. [39] This agreement covers most of the Asian countries except Philippines.

In July 2016 PokerStars stopped offering real money games to players who are physically located in, or have a registered address in, Slovenia. [49]
In July 2015 PokerStars withdrew from the Portuguese market. As a result, legal online poker returned to Portugal. [50]

Domain name seizure[edit]
On April 15, 2011, the Department of Justice seized the internet addresses of the three online gambling sites, [52] a total of five URLs:,,, and
On April 15, 2011, the U. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York seized and shut down and several of its competitors’ sites, alleging that the sites were violating federal bank fraud and money laundering laws. [53] On April 20, 2011, the U. Attorney’s office returned control of the domain name to the company in order “to facilitate the withdrawal of U. players’ funds held in account with the companies. “[54]
On July 10, 2012, PokerStars, asserting the Government had insufficient grounds on which to base the charges, filed motions to dismiss the charges against them. [55]
On July 31, 2012, the US government dismissed with prejudice all civil complaints against PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker after reaching a settlement with PokerStars which includes PokerStars purchasing Full Tilt. [15] Under the terms of the settlement, PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker admitted no wrongdoing for their past U. activities. The U. Government acknowledged both companies can apply for licenses to operate online gaming in the U. when a legal framework for such licenses is offered. [56] The settlement terms also called for PokerStars to acquire certain assets of Full Tilt Poker from the Government.
On August 9, 2012, PokerStars paid $225 million to the U. Department of Justice, consummating the asset transfer of Full Tilt Poker. Full Tilt Poker was successfully relaunched on November 6, 2012. [57]

Is PokerStars Rigged? Here Are the Facts [2021] | BlackRain79

The second most important reason why PokerStars is probably not rigged is kind of a biggie as well. And that is that you can actually just go and check it for yourself!
PokerStars is one of the few poker sites out there who are very open about what they do. They will in fact actually send you every single hand history that you have ever played on their site.
I know this because I did it myself once. I requested close to 8 million hands that I had played on PokerStars from them. Within 24 hours I had the links to download them all.
This means that I could then go stick those 8 million hands in a tracking program like PokerTracker and run extensive analysis and tests looking for statistical anomalies.
This is one of the biggest reasons why I am not a big fan of a recent trend in online poker towards anonymous poker sites and/or those who do not provide hand histories.
“Open source” poker sites like PokerStars are much better for the industry in my opinion because they allow us to essentially police the games for ourselves.
Any legit online poker site like PokerStars is not going to hide anything from you. All the hand histories are available for you to see for yourself.
Are you struggling to beat the low stakes games on PokerStars? Do you want a simple step by step guide to show you exactly how to start winning consistently right now?
That is why I recently wrote this free little 50 page no BS guide to teach you exactly how to start crushing these games right now.
As a 10+ year poker pro I give you my exact strategies to start consistently beating low stakes games on PokerStars for $1000+ per month.
Enter your details below and I will send my free poker cheat sheet to your email right now.
So given the fact that we can actually run our own tests and search for statical anomalies over massive sample sizes you would think that all the people who are so certain that PokerStars is rigged would have overwhelming evidence to support their claims.
Nope, nada, none.
There has never been one conclusive study that I have ever seen, based on a statistically relevant sample size, which actually proves that there is any rigging going on at PokerStars.
” AA got cracked 3 times in a row by some stupid fish!!!… I told you JOKERSTARS is rigged, rigged rigged!!! ”
The main problem with these “arguments” is that they fail to account for even the most basic variance in poker and they are completely lacking in a statistically significant sample size.
A sample size of 3 hands is completely meaningless in poker. And so is a sample size of 300 hands, 3, 000 hands or even 30, 000 hands.
This is why most advanced poker training programs these days focus exclusively on long term results based on solid decision making at the poker tables in the short run.
To put it quite simply, you need to be working with millions and millions of hands in order to get to the point where you can mathematically rule out variance.
Anyone who has actually played this many hands of poker knows exactly what I mean by this.
I have never seen a real legit study based on this many hands which conclusively proves that there are widespread statistical anomalies going on with the RNG on PokerStars.
Because if such a study like this actually did exist, believe me you would have heard about it by now. And it would be an absolute bombshell within the poker of these people who think PokerStars is rigged would do better to simply focus on increasing their poker winnings instead, rather than worrying so much about all their bad fact, as I discuss in my latest YouTube video, poker is not like a regular job where you get paid $50 for example each day for showing there, are ways to make $50 or $500 or even $5000 a day on average in on most days your results will be all over the place, both positive and negative. Hopefully more positive days than negative days, which is the entire goal.
So, losing poker players have an easy out. They can just continually convince themselves that their lack of success is due to some outside force beyond their control.
And therefore, they never even think to address the real reason why they keep losing, which is their own lack of skill and lack of tilt control among other things.
There is no other game on earth that I have ever seen that inspires such incredible levels of self delusion. And quite frankly, it is an absolutely beautiful thing.
5. Variance and the Speed of Online Poker
The final reason why some people swear that online poker is rigged is because they don’t realize how the speed of the online game changes everything.
Daniel Negreanu actually touches on this specifically in his new poker strategy course.
A lot of the people who claim that online poker is rigged come from a live poker background. Or they have played a statistically insignificant amount of hands online (less than 100k).
Therefore, they simply do not understand that the speed of online dealing (often 3 times as fast as a live game), coupled with the ability to multi-table, means that bad beats and coolers are simply bound to happen far more often than what they are used to.
This doesn’t mean that anything is actually rigged. It just means that you are now experiencing the acceleration of a Ferrari instead of your old Toyota.
Yes it is going to feel weird at first. It won’t even seem believable at times in fact. This is why many people do not feel that PokerStars is legit.
And if you try your hand at something like Zoom Poker (which deals hands upwards of 10 times as fast as a live poker game), it might just blow your mind completely!
You really have to understand that online poker is a completely different experience from live poker. Yes it is the same game with the same rules, but all of the similarities end there.
The speed at which the online version of the game is dealt means that you are going to get to the long run far quicker than you are used to. This also means that you will see the true depths of statistical variance much more vividly.
And when you add in the ability to multi-table into the mix as well, you better buckle up. Because it is going to be downright crazy and quite simply not believable at times.
By the way if your are curious how I am able to play 20+ tables of online poker and still keep track of all my opponents, yes I do use several poker software tools and aids.
For the complete list of all the poker software and tools that I use as a pro, click here.
Should You Use the New PokerStars All-In Cashout Feature?
I do also want to mention that PokerStars recently added an All-in Cash Out feature that people ask me about now all the time.
Basically, this feature allows you to “cashout” your equity in the hand when all the money goes into the middle, instead of just letting the cards fall as they may (and potentially taking a bad beat).
As far as I know the Pokerstars all-in cashout feature is only available at the lowest stakes (NL2, NL5 and NL10) and only on regular tables (i. e. not Zoom).
Now do I personally use this feature? No.
I honestly think it is pretty silly. However, I do think it is a very smart “gimmick” feature by PokerStars though.
Because now all the people who write them angry emails every day claiming it’s all rigged against them can just “cashout” their equity and avoid taking a dreaded bad beat.
For me though, this isn’t poker and this isn’t how winning players think about the game in my experience. I don’t play poker for the results of individual hands or day to day results.
I instead play poker for the long term (months and years) and focus on my results over hundreds of thousands of hands. This is how I have been able to create a career out of this game.
Therefore, since I know that my equity is going to be realized over the long term, I can stop focusing on short term results, like so many amateurs do, and just focus instead on consistently making good poker decisions.
However, for all those people who take it very personally every time they receive a bad beat in poker, this new All-in Cashout feature might be an option for you to consider when playing on PokerStars.
How I Became the Biggest Winner of All-Time on PokerStars (Micro Stakes)
The debate about online poker being rigged or not will rage on no matter what I say here.
And I know a few people will probably even accuse me of being a “shill” for PokerStars after writing this article.
The most hilarious part about that is anyone who actually reads my poker blog regularly knows that I have been actively recommending that you DO NOT play at PokerStars for many, many years now!
And that is not because I think there is any rigging going on at PokerStars or that PokerStars is not legit.
It is simply because there are many far easier online poker sites (softer games) available these days to play at in my opinion.
But hopefully some of the points discussed in this article will help bring some sanity back to the discussion. Obviously online poker faces many challenges and the integrity of the games will always be questioned as well.
Humans like to cheat at stuff after all. The sky is blue as well!
But the idea that there is any widespread rigging going on at PokerStars in particular is pretty absurd in my opinion.
I have made a lot of money on PokerStars over the years as a 10+ year poker pro by simply using a solid fundamental tight and aggressive strategy and focusing heavily on my tilt control.
This is in fact why I originally wrote what is now the best selling poker strategy book of all-time for low stakes PokerStars games, Crushing the Microstakes.
And then I also included hours and hours of optional videos with the book of me personally playing Zoom, 6max and full ring on PokerStars.
I have made tens of thousands of dollars in these low stakes games (some of the highest in PokerStars history), and I wanted to show people exactly how I did it with a video series.
I also wanted to prove once and for all that you can absolutely crush these games when you use the right poker strategy and focus on your tilt control.
However, I can’t lie.
After playing millions and millions of hands on PokerStars, I have also taken an enormous amount of bad beats over the years. So much so, that it seemed completely unbelievable at times.
And there have been many times when I felt like just giving up completely. Throwing in the towel and quitting.
But I realized that this is the time when you find out what you are really made of as a poker player. When you can’t win a hand to save your life for weeks or even months on end.
This is when you separate yourself from all the other amateurs out there. This is when you get to prove that you are a professional.
And this really is the critical point.
Winning at poker over the long run is really hard. It takes an unbelievable amount of work ethic, discipline, self control and patience.
Me multi-tabling on PokerStars
And as a 10+ year poker pro I can tell you that the vast majority of people who play this game are simply not willing to put in this level of dedication and work.
After all, it is so much easier to shift the blame onto somebody or something else than to actually put in the hard work every single day both at the poker tables and away from them improving your game.
Look guys, if being a big winner in poker was easy, then everybody would be doing it. The bottom line is that you will get exactly what you put into this game.
You can keep choosing to believe that it is all rigged against you like most people do, or you can choose to finally address the real root causes for your lack of success in poker.
Having coached 100+ people myself to finally start winning big on PokerStars, I can tell you that the #1 reason most people don’t win is because they are bad at poker.
I found that many people *think* they are good at poker, but in reality they do not really understand how to play a fundamentally sound tight and aggressive poker strategy.
They also typically suffer from an appalling lack of discipline and tilt control in most cases, both of which are absolutely vital components of any winning poker strategy.
To put it bluntly, it is only when you finally decide to start approaching this game like a professional that you will start creating the real consistent profits you have always dreamed about on Pokerstars.
In any case, I wish you all the best at the poker tables in 2021 no matter what your poker goals are. Thank you for reading.
Lastly, if you want to know the strategy I use to consistently make $1000+ per month on PokerStars as a 10+ year poker pro, make sure you grab a copy of my free poker cheat sheet.
How to Make Money Playing Poker? (2021)

How to Make Money Playing Poker? (2021)

Perhaps the most common question people ask poker players is can you make money playing poker online or at the casino. If you remember your first time sitting down at the poker table, there’s a chance of recalling that feeling of being very excited by the possibilities the game offers. You can play some cards, outwit your opponents while doing it and win some money as a result of playing rhaps you played in a home game after watching some WPT broadcasts where hole cards were shown for the first time or tried out some poker freerolls on the internet. Some players stumbled into poker via other games like chess, Magic The Gathering or eSports Many old school players tried their hand at poker after betting on different gambling games at the casino and were hooked from the very first short, you can definitely make money playing poker online, but you need to have several disciplines and strategies in place before you book a win regularly. At the virtual felts, you can play several hundred hands per hour, and finding a suitable game is much to win money playing live poker at the casinoCasino poker or live poker has the same rules as online poker, but the game is quite different when played live. If you don’t live next to a casino, you will have to either drive or travel by other means physically to play. Due to gambling restrictions, some countries don’t even have casinos at all. You can only play one table at the time in a card room, and you will see all the reactions of your opponents during the hands. Live tells can be used to gain an advantage, and the game often plays deep same way you play online, your goal is to choose a good game and increase your balance by playing and improving your win-rate by studying the game. The only difference is you will be getting all the chips cashed out at the end of your session at the casino. Choosing the right games to play can make the difference between being a losing player and being a consistent winner. Many people have started from freerolls or tournaments on legal online poker sites, but the most consistent winners usually prefer cash games both online and games have a few advantages when it comes to making money playing poker:You’re free to start and quit the session whenever you pleaseYou can always find a game to play as opposed to scheduled tournamentsThere’s less variance in cash game than in tournamentsIn the early days of online poker, Full-Ring No-Limit Holdem was the game format to play. In modern poker these games pretty much only exist in live poker, so 6-max poker is the way to go. If you’re just starting out with poker, you can play at micro stakes online such as NL5 or NL10. Playing these levels you can gain experience without risking a lot of live poker, your options are more limited. NL200 is usually the smallest game you can find at any casino, although some casinos do have NL100 also in their repertoire. If you buying with the full 100bb stack, your first sessions can quickly get quite costly compared to starting out online. On the other hand, the pace of play is much slower in live poker with full ring tables which is a good thing when you’re just starting out. You’ll be able to follow the action much more closely and get a good grasp on how the betting rounds work on each street. For a tournament player, the tournament buy-ins of live events start from around $20 and go up to tens of thousands at prestigious high roller portance of game selection in pokerGame selection is a critical yet underrated poker skill. You should not put effort only into improving your technical skills and win-rate, but also into choosing the game with the highest expectation. You have to do this within the means of your poker bankroll of course. Choosing a game where you have an advantage over other players allows your skills to realize we can’t overemphasize the importance of game selection enough, many players don’t take advantage of all available options when looking for good games. Make sure you take the following steps in your game selection process:Step 1. Check out both online poker sites and live casinos available in your countryStep 2. Find information about the rake with each option and compare where the rake eats least of your winningsStep 3. Scan different games regularly and mark any particularly juicy games that you can beat with a good win-rateStep 4. Keep track of your playing sessions at both online poker sites and local casinos to see where the best games are (use a reasonable sample like 500 hours of play or 50k hands)Step 5. Spend more time playing in games found in steps 1-4 where you tend to win the mostAs time goes by, you will probably learn to recognize a good game fast and even get to know the players that you want to play against. This leads us to our next topic:Finding less-skilled opponents to play againstWhile no one wants to be called a bad player even the second-best poker player in the world will be worse compared to his opponent in case he decides to play the best player in the world. Similarly, you might have great skills but if you constantly play against even better players, making money in poker will be an uphill battle that you cannot win. Sitting down at a random poker table without scanning it first for the level of play is basically a big leak in your game that will decrease your potential to make sure you maximize your edge at the tables then? The solution is to always play with players who are less-skilled and experienced. Poker is a game played between people, and you’re not competing against the house as in other gambling games like sports betting or blackjack. This is also the reason why poker can be so profitable over a long period of should start with micro or low stakes online or at the smallest poker table you can find at your local casino. Why do we recommend this? There’s a simple reason for it: To be able to play with players who are making large mistakes on every street! If you choose to play online you can use a Heads-Up Display (HUD) to recognize loose players. Players with over 35% VPIP (voluntarily put money in pot) are almost always bad in a ring game, as they can’t help but play too many hands. Most of the time they’re passive you get some experience using a HUD in online poker, we recommend trying out and utilizing other types of poker software at the tables too. There are several different poker software that can help you in finding good games, using hotkeys when multi-tabling and analyzing your play after the session. Read more about one of the best tracking and analyzing software from our Holdem Manager 3 review. In live poker it might be impossible to keep track of what percentage of hands everyone plays, so you can simplify the process of recognizing recreational players by looking for the following behaviors:Limping in an unopened pot preflopRoutinely calling raises preflop instead of 3-bettingCalling multiple streets with medium or bottom pairs postflopShowing garbage hands at showdown such us 92s, Q4o or J5oPosting a Blind Out Of PositionBuying in for less than 100bbWhile none of these moves alone can assure someone is a recreational poker player, doing multiple things on this list is pretty much a no-brainer indication that someone is not that good at poker. When you spot a player like this, try to make sure you get a seat on their left at the table. This way you can act last after them every hand, allowing you to make better decisions against them and capitalize on their mistakes in more oosing your starting hands‘Learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist. ’ –Pablo PicassoIf you watch chess grandmasters play, they’re extremely fast to make their moves early in the game and get those moves right. That’s the equivalent of preflop in poker where the best poker players automatically know which hands to open and 3-bet from any given position. Knowing the starting hands charts by heart comes handy when playing poker, and they’re available on many poker training do you see players like Tom Dwan and Phil Ivey play hands outside the starting hands charts then? Due to their vast experience of poker, they know when to break those rules to win even more post-flop. For most players, these trashy starting hands won’t show a profit. Our advice is not to play bad hands in a 6-max or full ring poker – you can certainly become a winning poker player by sticking to a solid pre-flop learn the right starting hands easily, we recommend checking the starting hands guide from our 6-max poker strategy guide. Players who choose which hands to raise according to these starting hands charts are described as tight-aggressive or TAG. A TAG is quite selective in which hands they play, but once they enter the pot they come in with a raise or a 3-bet instead of limping or cold-calling. Most winning poker players have TAG style at the tables, and we recommend using this approach for aying fundamentally sound pokerWhen you’re playing poker, by definition you win money by making better decisions than your opponents. Mistakes are inevitable for any poker player no matter how good they are. Great players just make a lot fewer mistakes than their less-skilled villains. Mistakes are what basically keep the games going, as nobody would win in the long run if everybody played poker without ning players have an edge at the table due to making fewer mistakes than break-even or losing players. That edge is there regardless of cards they’re being dealt, what situations occur at the table or what are the different stack sizes of players at the table. Most of the time you don’t win by making a brilliant play – you win by playing fundamentally sound poker and capitalizing on the poor decisions of your opponents. To get your fundamentals right in poker, you must understand game theory and apply it at the tables! Get well-selected strategy videos every month, instant feedback from personalized quizzes and join a community of highly motivated players & top-level game theory in practiceGame theory in poker can be defined as the theoretical knowledge of how poker works and how one can profit by playing. The very starting point is of course the rules of the particular game format you’re playing. On top of that, you add the underlying probabilities and odds in poker. In every poker game, you’re striving to have optimal betting frequencies taking into account the tendencies of your Sklansky wrote it in a thorough way in his book The Theory of Poker: ‘It’s the aim of maximizing wins, and minimizing losses. ’To do this, you need to have a reasonably balanced poker strategy as your baseline. By balanced we mean a strategy that is hard to exploit – one that makes money in the long run against players who play an unbalanced strategy. In the short term it’s possible to get coolered or out-drawn, but the plays you make will be profitable on poker solvers, you can estimate quite good approximations of a balanced strategy, but perfect game theory optimal strategy hasn’t yet been calculated for multiplayer poker games and formats. Yet, it’s very profitable to learn how a balanced poker strategy looks like in different spots, as based on this you will be able to craft better adjustments to capitalize on the specific mistakes your opponents make. On the other hand, other players will have a hard time playing against you, as you will be the one that adjusts first. Once they catch on what you’re doing, you will notice this and change your game plan ’s no need to disguise your holdings against players who can’t read your hand or don’t care about anything other than their own hand (or even don’t know the rules of poker properly). Majority of the time you need to disguise your hand though, as most poker players will notice any glaring patterns that you have. For example, if you always raise bigger with just AA, KK and QQ and raise small with all other holdings preflop, any decent opponent will not give you action when you have premium pocket do we play in a way that is not so predictable? You want to give your other players hard time to put you on a hand. This way you’re not easy to beat, and it’s likely your opponents will make big mistakes against you at some point. Here are three easy techniques you can apply to achieve this:Raise the same amount with all your hands preflop from a particular position. If you’re raising around 40% of your starting hands on the button to 2. 5BB, the blinds can’t know if you’re holding AA, T9s, 33 or something else. They can just see that you’re folding a little over half the time, and raising with the same sizing with the hands that you play. If they think you’re raising with mediocre hands and decide to fight back, they will eventually pay you off when you happen to hold a premium hand. Likewise, if they think you’re raising with good hands only, you will steal their blinds many times before they start to fight both your strong hands and draws the same way postflop. When you don’t change your betting patterns based on the strength of your holdings, it’s virtually impossible for your opponents to put you on a hand postflop. You will be harder to read and win more often as a result! Don’t give away information for free. Even if you’re casually revealing some hands at the table, some of your opponents might use this information against you in the future. The best players in the world never reveal their cards unless they’re at showdown and are forced to flip their cards up. By never showing your cards voluntarily you keep your villains guessing whether you’re bluffing or value-betting justing to your opponentsUnderstanding and playing a balanced poker strategy will keep your win-rate high, but knowing how to make correct adjustments according to how your opponents are playing will put even more money in your pocket. Successfully adjusting your strategy requires two components: Recognizing the tendencies of other players and taking advantage of those tendencies by playing the correct counter-strategy. Again, you can use 3 different techniques to achieve this:Study your opponents closely at the table. This is the starting point for any adjustments in poker. Look at their moves and see if you can spot what kind of patterns they have. Focus on catching any information about their play that might help your decision-making in future a mental note of the hands they have at the showdown. Showdowns reveal the whole story of a particular hand that was played. Often they reveal also the thought processes of the players involved. Sometimes by seeing just a single showdown you can understand how the players involved approach the game preflop and tegorize your villains based on their aggressiveness. Often your adjustments at the table will be quite simple, as they’re based on the aggression level of your opponents. Facing a raise from a passive opponent on the turn or river holding an overpair? You have an easy fold. Get raised by a maniac on the flop? Start checking back more hands against them, as they will give you plenty of action when you flop something you won’t be suddenly gaining a crystal clear vision of the exact holdings of your opponents, utilizing these techniques will help you in making good estimations of your opponents’ holdings more often than not. Better estimations allow you to make better decisions, eventually leading to more control and mental game in poker‘If there weren’t luck involved, I would win every time. ’ -Phil HellmuthOn any given day, the worst player at the table might win heaps and the best player can get buried.
