If you’re a Filipino abroad and you want to catch up on local news or tune into ABS-CBN for the next episode of Maalaala Mo Kaya, you’re going to need an IP address in the Philippines. That’s thanks to wonderful geoblocks, which are also the reason why you’ll see a different Netflix library to that of the Philippines. That’s not all, though.
Accessing your Filipino bank account or other important services can also be difficult. You can bypass the restrictions easily with a VPN, though, and this guide will tell you how. We’ve listed three VPN services that’ll get you a Philippines IP address, but if you’re in a rush, we recommend you install ExpressVPN. You should check out our best VPN for the Philippines if you plan on visiting the country.
How to Get a Filipino IP Address
Getting a Filipino IP address isn’t a daunting task, no matter what your location. There are a couple of ways you can do it, too. Firstly, you can use a proxy server to get different IP addresses. It’s an easy option, but it’s also a bad option when it comes to security. As you can read in our VPN vs proxy vs Tor guide, a proxy is not secure, which means you’re fresh meat for cyber criminals.
With that in mind, it’s a better idea to use a virtual private network. A VPN includes in-built security and privacy to protect you from online dangers, so that alone makes it a better choice. Our best VPN list has some great options, but to be suitable, the VPN also needs to have servers in the Philippines.
Step-by-Step: How to Get an IP Address for the Philippines
Sign up to a VPN service that has Filipino servers (ExpressVPN is our top choice)
Download the VPN app for your device
Launch the app and sign in
Search for a Filipino server, connect to it and access online services as usual
1. ExpressVPN
ExpressVPN is the top option for getting a Filipino IP address. It not only has servers in the Philippines, but it also comes with some of the best security and privacy features around. It’s also the fastest VPN we’ve tested, which is important given the Filipino online infrastructure.
You also get unlimited bandwidth and it can access all streaming services, making it our best VPN for streaming overall. You can use it on Windows, macOS, Android and iOS with up to five simultaneous connections. Our ExpressVPN review goes into more detail, but you could use the 30-day money-back guarantee to see if you like it.
Pros:
Fast speeds
Accesses all streaming platforms
Top security & privacy
2. CyberGhost
CyberGhost has a whopping 76 servers in Manila, so you’ll have no problem getting a Filipino IP address. It has great security and privacy, as well as decent speeds — though they can become slow over long distances. You also get unlimited data and the use of CyberGhost’s dedicated streaming servers, including for Netflix.
It can be used on Windows, macOS, Android and iOS, and you can connect up to seven devices at the same time. There’s more information in our CyberGhost review, but you can take advantage of the free trial that’s on offer to see if you like it. Mobile users get seven days and desktop users get one day, but there’s also a long money-back guarantee.
76 servers in the Philippines
Inexpensive
Free trial
Cons:
Inconsistent speeds
3. Private Internet Access
We can also recommend Private Internet Access. It has 24 Filipino servers and comes with good security and privacy. One thing to note, though, is that PIA uses 128-bit encryption out of the box, so you’ll need to tweak the settings to get the recommended 256-bit encryption. You can connect 10 devices at a time, and it’s compatible with Windows, macOS, Android and iOS.
It has unlimited data and its speeds are mostly fast, but it may not be the best choice if your main activity will be watching your favorite shows online. PIA can’t get into some streaming platforms, but it can get into Netflix. You can read our PIA review for more, or take it for a spin knowing you’re covered by a 30-day money-back guarantee.
Cheap
Gets into Netflix
Mostly good speeds
Has trouble accessing some streaming platforms
Can be slow
The Dangers of Using a Philippines IP Address
Although connecting to a Filipino IP address isn’t dangerous as such, there are a few bits of information that can give cause for concern in the online world. For instance, there is evidence that government surveillance is probably, especially since such technology worth $185, 000 was sold to the Philippines in 2018.
On top of that, the rate of cybercrime in the Philippines has risen. That includes identity theft and online scams. Using a VPN whenever you access the internet — in any location — will keep you safe from all of that, but it wouldn’t hurt to install a good antivirus, too. That’s especially important if you use free public WiFi.
Final Thoughts
If you’re outside of the Philippines and need to access content or a specific website that’s restricted to the country, then a Philippines IP address is what you need. To get one, you need to download a VPN and connect to a Filipino server, so it’s important to check if the VPN service has servers there first.
We recommend using ExpressVPN. It has servers in the country, and it has excellent security and privacy, meaning you’ll be protected the whole time. Plus, if you like to stream, ExpressVPN can get into any streaming service. It comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee, too, in case you don’t like it.

@IanGarland_ UPDATED: September 19, 2021
Normally, when you use the internet, your Internet Service Provider (ISP), workplace network administrators, and in some places, the government can see exactly what you’re doing online. However, if you connect to a VPN, your traffic is encrypted and as such, unreadable. This is particularly useful if you live in a country with strict online censorship, or where speaking too freely online comes with real, significant risk.
Of course, there’s an additional advantage to using a VPN: it can make it appear as though you’re in a different country. Geo-locked platforms check the user’s IP address to see if they’re within the service’s broadcast area or not. As a result, you can bypass these restrictions and access a huge range of previously off-limits content simply by connecting to a server in one of the supported regions.
How to get a Philippines IP address
Follow these steps to get an IP address for the Philippines:
Begin by signing up to a suitable VPN service (we recommend ExpressVPN).
Next, install the software, taking care to get the appropriate version for your device.
Connect to any of your VPN’s servers in the Philippines.
Finally, try loading a geo-locked Philippine website. If it doesn’t load immediately, clear your browser’s cache and cookies, then refresh the page.
If you’re trying to watch a live event, we strongly recommend performing the steps above well in advance. This way, if anything doesn’t work as intended, you’ll still have enough time to get help from your VPN’s customer support team.
PREMIUM VPN ACCESS FOR FREE: If you’re only looking for short-term VPN coverage (for example, if you’re going on vacation abroad), you don’t actually have to pay anything. Instead, you can use ExpressVPN’s 30-day money-back guarantee; an upfront payment is required but you can cancel within 30 days to receive a full refund, no questions asked.
We’ll cover each provider in-depth, discussing the key features on offer. If you don’t have time to read the whole article, here’s a quick list of the best VPNs for getting an IP address for the Philippines:

Will a free VPN get me an IP address from the Philippines?
Free VPNs can be an appealing prospect, but we advise against using one. For a start, there aren’t many that offer servers in the Philippines so you may not even be able to get a Philippines IP address. Further, these services are almost always painfully slow. This makes day-to-day browsing difficult and streaming (especially of HD content) extremely frustrating, with frequent, lengthy pauses. You may even find yourself disconnected from the VPN, which could leave you unprotected and unaware that anything is wrong.
If users aren’t charged upfront, how can these services afford to operate? Well, it’s because you generate the company money in other ways. You’ll often find that free VPNs insert large ads into the pages you visit, but some even use tracking cookies to harvest data including which sites you visit and how often you do so. Once enough information has been collected, it can be sold to advertisers without your knowledge and or explicit consent.
Finally, there’s the security aspect to consider. While paid services are extensively tested and vetted prior to release, free VPNs usually aren’t. One study found that out of 283 free VPN apps tested, 18% never encrypted user traffic, and 84% were vulnerable to IPv6 leaks. Further, more than 38% of these apps actively tried to infect the user’s system with malware. Even popular free VPNs come with risks, as we found when Hola was caught selling idle user bandwidth to help facilitate a botnet.
The best way to protect yourself online is by using a reputable VPN provider with a customer-first privacy policy.
Can I watch Philippine TV abroad with a VPN?
Once you’ve connected to one of your VPN’s servers in the Philippines, you should be able to securely access most geo-restricted Philippine sites from anywhere in the world. For instance, you’ll be able to stream content from platforms such as Netflix, Iflix, iWant TV, HOOQ, and Viu.
Note that subscription services can be slightly more difficult, however, as you’ll still need to sign up. Netflix is simple, since it’s available in almost any country in the world, but some services require a payment method linked to a local address. If you usually live in the Philippines, you can register using your regular credit card, but if you don’t, and the service requires you to provide identification, you might be out of luck.
Why else might I need a Philippine IP address?
Many online services (including banks) automatically send out alerts when your account is accessed from a different country. However, even if you’re abroad, if you have a Philippine IP address, these platforms likely won’t notice that you’re actually elsewhere. As such, a VPN enables you to safely log in to your BPI, BDO Unibank, or Citibank account while on vacation, without worrying about having your access restricted.
While traveling, you’re far more likely to use public wifi networks. The problem is that these networks are often poorly secured, and equally troubling, there’s no way of knowing who’s monitoring user activity. Thanks to your VPN’s encryption, though, you’ll be able to browse safely, free from prying eyes, wherever you go.
What internet restrictions are in place in the Philippines?
The Philippines actually has a mixed record when it comes to online censorship. Unlike China, its government doesn’t impose blanket restrictions on particular kinds of content, but it does have a history of concerted online disinformation and social manipulation campaigns.
In June 2016, President Duterte infamously said: “Just because you’re a journalist you are not exempted from assassination. ” Four journalists were killed in 2017 alone and as a result, citizens are far more likely to censor their own content than the government is. For this reason alone, we highly recommend using a VPN when in the Philippines.
IPv4 Private Address Space and Filtering - ARIN

IPv4 Private Address Space and Filtering – ARIN

According to standards set forth in Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) document RFC-1918, the following IPv4 address ranges are reserved by the IANA for private internets, and are not publicly routable on the global internet:
10. 0. 0/8 IP addresses: 10. 0 – 10. 255. 255
172. 16. 0/12 IP addresses: 172. 0 – 172. 31. 255
192. 168. 0/16 IP addresses: 192. 0 – 192. 255
Note that only a portion of the “172” and the “192” address ranges are designated for private use. The remaining addresses are considered “public, ” and thus are routable on the global Internet.
Use caution when setting filters to exclude these private address ranges. In some cases, Regional Internet Registries (RIRs) have issued adjacent address space to their customers and that space is in use on the global Internet.
In August 2012, ARIN began allocating “172” address space to internet service, wireless, and content providers. There have been reports from the community that many network operators are denying access to devices having IP addresses from within the entire 172 /8 range. As a result, any device with a 172. x. x IP address may have difficulty reaching some sites on the global Internet. The only way to solve this problem is for those operators to reconfigure their routers or firewall access controls and filter only address space from the 172. 0/12 range.
