Is your internet enabled? This is the cause of a lot of multiplayer problems. Also, try checking to see if there is a program blocking Minecraft from using internet. I went a while with no multiplayer, and it turned out that my mom’s thing was blocking servers from Minecraft! Try these, as I don’t know any other ways.

Make sure you are on minecraft 1. 8 I was on 1. 7. 10 and had the same problem.
