This wikiHow teaches you how to send a private message to the moderators of a private subreddit and ask to join as a new member, using a desktop internet browser.
Steps
1Open Reddit in your internet browser. Type in your browser’s address bar, and hit ↵ Enter or ⏎ Return on your keyboard.
2Sign in to your personal account. Enter your username and password in the username and password fields in the upper-right corner of your screen, and click the login button.
3Click the envelope icon next to your username. The white envelope icon next to your username in the upper-right corner of your screen will open your messages page.
4Click send a private message. This button is located next to the inbox tab in the upper-left corner of your screen. It will start a new private message.
5
Type /r/name of the private subreddit in the “to” field. Entering the subreddit name here will send your message to all of this subreddit’s moderators.
If you don’t know a subreddit’s /r/name, open the subreddit in your browser and check the end of its URL link in your address bar.
For example, if the subreddit URL is, you should enter /r/privatesub1 into the “to” field.
6Enter a relevant subject line in the “subject” field. Make sure your subject line is brief and to the point.
7
Write a message expressing your desire to join the private subreddit. In the “message” field, politely explain why you want to join the private subreddit, and request an invite from the moderators.
There is no guarantee your join request will be approved. Most private subreddits have very selective criteria for accepting new members.
8Click the send button. This will send your message to all of this subreddit’s moderators.
9Check your messages inbox for a reply. Give the moderators some time to read your message, and regularly check your inbox for a reply. If your request is approved, you may receive an invite link from one of the moderators.

Question
Why are some subreddits private?
Private subreddits usually have content that wouldn’t be appropriate for the whole world to see. For example, embarrassing/humiliating stories or personally identifying information that could give someone’s identity or location away. They might also be only for a closed group of friends or family. Some private subreddits are actually empty or inactive, or are just joke pages. The information box in the subreddit should say what the subreddit is for.

Welcome to TNW Basics, a collection of tips, guides, and advice on how to easily get the most out of your gadgets, apps, and other stuff. I love scrolling through Reddit when I wake up on weekends – especially since I fine-tuned my feeds to separate work from leisure. But there’s one thing that always kills my vibe: the dreaded [removed] sign. You know it, you’ve seen it, you hate it [removed] (or [deleted]) notice shows up after a Redditor – or a moderator – wipes a post for one reason or another. In my experience, though, Removeddit does a far better job of caching removed posts. Another workaround is to replace the “R” in “Reddit” with a “C” – similarly to the way Removeddit like that: users have previously pointed out that the SSL certificate from Ceddit is invalid, but that doesn’t seem to be the case anymore. In any case, I personally prefer using Removeddit – its UI is, there you go: now you know what to do next time you spot the [removed] tagged with
