A free VPN might let you explore another country’s Netflix catalog, but when it comes time to watch you’ll almost certainly encounter the proxy error.
What’s more, these services typically provide users with a limited selection of servers, which means you’re less likely to be able to access the Netflix library you’re looking for. Even if you do get access, chances are you’ll be frustrated with slow connection speeds and even having to wait in a queue for some servers. You may also find free VPNs don’t offer unlimited bandwidth, making it difficult to do any streaming of HD content. Can I use a DNS proxy to change region on Netflix? Many providers of DNS proxy services will advertise the ability to watch Netflix and other streaming sites. Indeed, as long as the IP address they provide isn’t blocked by Netflix, then you’ll be able to gain access and enjoy streaming shows and movies.
However, the major problem is that it’s very easy for Netflix to block DNS proxies, so they end up being very unreliable. They also tend to have fewer countries available, so you have less chance of finding the library you want. One proxy that doesn’t suffer from these issues is ExpressVPN’s MediaStreamer DNS service, which is included in every subscription. It’s used by default when you connect to the VPN but can also be configured separately.
More importantly for some, a DNS proxy does not encrypt your traffic, so your activity is open to your ISP and anyone else who might be snooping. Why am I posting this, you ask? Because when we visited last year with our two teens, it meant that my wife and I could get our kids take out in the evening and leave them in the hotel watching Netflix while we went out to jazz clubs. Not a single whine out of them, either! The selection is different, though, but it wasn’t a problem. Obviously, you’ll need wi-fi to take advantage of this.

The reverse is also true. When Canadian subscribers are in the US, they can access the US listings.
Actually, its a great opportunity to check out some Canadian films and TV shows you might not get a chance to see otherwise.

Well, the selection in Canada is significantly smaller than the US: it’s a complicated game of content agreements and licensing, normally not in our favour although sometimes we get lucky and we have, say, Downton Abbey when the US doesn’t. There are even companies that allow people from outside the U. S. to fake their computer’s DNS so that it appears that they are in the US and have access to US content on Netflix, Hulu, and so on.

I find that there are more movies on Netflix Canada but more primetime TV shows on Netflix US.
Ironically, there are Canadian tv shows which are available on netflix US but not on Netflix Canada. Go figure =P

I think it’s because some Canadian TV shows can’t be on Netflix CA because they would conflict with broadcast rights. I am sure the same is true in reverse
My kids said that the CA availability of movies was better than the US availability (though I can’t remember what specifically was available in CA but not in US)

Well, there are also US shows available here that aren’t available in the US, so it goes both ways, and some are available only for a certain time and then disappear. As a consumer, it’s very confusing: imagine how complicated it must be at the lawyer level dealing with all these agreements in so many countries:)
