Everything You Need to Know About the Instagram Creator …
Marketers hungry for more insights into their Instagram audience now have the option of signing up for an Instagram creator account.
Instagram introduced the account option in early 2019 as an alternative to the business profile. After a brief beta testing period, the social platform made creator profiles available to anyone.
How do Instagram creator profiles differ from a regular business profile though? And are all the new features really worth making the switch? Read on to find out. Bonus: Download a free checklist that reveals the exact steps a lifestyle photographer used to grow from 0 to 600, 000 followers on Instagram with no budget and no expensive gear.
Who are Instagram creator accounts for?
Initially, Instagram offered their creator account features to any profile with more than 10, 000 followers.
This tells us two things:
Instagram wants to double down on influencers. 87. 1% of influencers say that Instagram is their top platform. Instagram recognizes that influencers play a large role on their app and now want to offer even more services to attract and keep them sharing content there.
Instagram wants to separate businesses from influencers. The creator profiles include features and tools that specifically cater to influencers who are not attached to more traditional business models. They are officially recognizing that the two have different needs when it comes to social management. This attempt at separation can best be seen in the image below.
Instagram is targeting individual users with their creator profile offerings. In fact, if you go to switch your account, the app says that creator profiles are “Best for public figures, content producers, artists, and influencers. ”
To help attract and cater to influencers, Instagram creator accounts offers a wealth of new features for influencers to go even deeper on their follower metrics.
What special features do Instagram creator accounts include?
Is it really worth it to switch from your personal or business account to an Instagram creator profile? Yes, if you want to learn even more insights on your users and manage your posts and messages better.
Instagram offers a number of new features to help creators learn more about their users including:
Detailed growth data
Instagram creator accounts give you an in-depth look at your followers with information such as:
Daily number of unfollow and follows. With just a business account, users only have access to their weekly unfollow and follow count. This helps influencers because they can now see which videos positively or negatively impact them each day.
Demographic data (age, location, etc. ). Offered in business accounts as well, Instagram creator profiles gives influencers the ability to look at who exactly their followers are and cater content to them.
Instagram creator dashboard. Instagram introduced a new “Creator Studio” to help influencers gain all of their insights on one handy dashboard (see below).
Streamlined messaging
Influencers receive countless messages each day for collaborations, fans who just want to say “Hi, ” and creepy followers who have no business being on social media.
Yikes.
With a business or personal account, users have just one primary inbox for all their DMs as well as a message requests folder for DMs from people they don’t follow.
With Instagram creator accounts, influencers have access to three folders:
Primary. Messages that the influencer wants to receive and be notified of.
General. Messages that the influencer doesn’t want notifications for.
Requests. Messages from people the influencer does not follow.
Creators may move messages between folders whenever they wish. This allows users to prioritize messages from friends, families, and other people they want to hear from.
More labels
Instagram creator profiles give users more flexibility with how they label and brand themselves.
With a business account, Instagram assigns the profile the category you used on your connected Facebook page. That means if you are an “underwater basket weaver” on your Facebook page, then you’re an “underwater basket weaver” on your Instagram business profile.
With an Instagram creator account, though, you may choose whatever label you want to brand yourself as—and with more choices.
This allows you to really go niche with your personal brand and choose the label that’s right for you.
Flexible contact
Influencers get inundated with calls and emails for collaborations, influencer marketing pitches, and spam every day. Now with Instagram creator profiles, they have the option to turn off their contact buttons to stem that flow of requests.
Before, Instagram business profiles provided a call-to-action for followers to contact users using whatever contact information the user provided. Now, influencers can simply turn off that contact information whenever they want.
This gives users more agency over who contacts them—or rather, doesn’t contact them.
Instagram creator profile vs Instagram business profile
With all the features included with the creator profile, there’s no real reason to keep a business profile — unless you use a third-party scheduling and analytics tool (like Hootsuite) to make your Instagram management easier. Currently, publishing from creator accounts is not supported by the Instagram API.
But, if you’re an individual with a brand you want to promote on Instagram who doesn’t need to schedule content in advance or manage multiple accounts from one dashboard, it’s probably worth the switch. You’ll get more detailed analytics, not to mention control over your inbox and flexibility in how you brand your account.
It’s worth noting that creator account features are tailored to help profiles with large followings. (If you want to increase your follower count, read our article on how to get free Instagram followers). But they can still help you if you have a smaller following.
How to switch to an Instagram creator account
So you have a large dedicated list of followers.
You want to have more data and metrics to help create more engaging content for them.
And you want to have more control over your messages, filters, and contact information.
Congrats! You’re ready to switch to a creator account. Now let’s take a look at the steps to do exactly that.
Note: that if your account is private, switching it over to a creator account will make it public. If that’s an issue for you, then you might not want to make a creator account.
Step 1: Go into your settings
Go to your profile and click on the hamburger menu in the top right corner.
Then click on the Settings button at the bottom of the menu.
From your settings menu, select Account.
If you have a personal account, select Switch to Professional Account at the bottom.
If you have a business account, select Switch to Creator Account at the bottom.
If you’re switching from a personal account, you’ll then see this menu. Bonus: Download a free checklist that reveals the exact steps a lifestyle photographer used to grow from 0 to 600, 000 followers on Instagram with no budget and no expensive gear.

Select the Creator box and move onto the next step.
Step 2: Create your account
Choose your category label from the list.
Choose the label that best describes you and your brand. Click Next.
You’ll then have the option to link to a Facebook Page. If you want to link one, choose from the list they provide you. If you don’t want to, that’s okay! Just click Skip and move on to review your contact information.
This is where you’ll have the option to choose whether or not the ability to contact you appears on your profile. Choose the options you want. You can always change it later.
Once you do that, then voila! You’ve created your Instagram creator account. Awesome!
Now you get to view all your new metrics — which brings us to…
Step 3: Check out your new features
First, explore your new Insights by clicking on the hamburger menu on your profile.
Then tap on Insights.
From here, the app shows you all of your new insights in three tabs. First, there’s the Content tab. This shows you all the posts you’ve had this week and how they’ve performed.
Next, you have the Activity tab showing all of the interactions people have had with your profile, as well as the number of times your posts and profile have been discovered in the last week.
Last, there’s the Audience tab. This shows you all the demographic information about your followers.
In your messages, you can see the new General inbox you can keep your messages in.
Explore your new Instagram creator profile and familiarize yourself with the new features, metrics, and insights.
Save time managing your Instagram presence using Hootsuite. From a single dashboard you can schedule and publish posts directly to Instagram, engage the audience, measure performance, and run all your other social media profiles. Try it free today.
