Advice on starting e-commerce website! PLEASE. – Reddit

Hi guys. I’ve been thinking a lot about starting my very first e-commerce website with a focus on kitchenware. But I just have some questions before I go are the best websites to buy wholesale from besides Alibaba? When you buy in bulk, what is the best way to keep that inventory? ——a lil backstory: I live in a small apartment so I am worried I’m not going to have enough space. Is it a good idea to rent out a storage unit? PLEASE buying wholesale, can you market as your own product? Is Shopify or Wix the best website to set up site? I know these may be dumb questions and that is why I need your guys help. Would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!!

Why should I NOT build an eCommerce website from scratch?

First of all, I am a novice web developer, with HTML, CSS, and a little bit of PHP experience. I am trying to build an eCommerce website for a very small business. I have heard that lots of security issues will come along when building your own eCommerce website from scratch. But what kind of security issues, and are they really hard to deal with? I have also heard that using WordPress/WooCommerce and Shopify are good eCommerce platforms.. but why? Do I still end up learning programming using WooCommerce/Shopify? Thanks! edit: thank you all for your input! You guys gave me so much insight! I will use a prebuilt eCommerce platform for my small business. But I will also continue to build it from scratch and just play around with it.

Why is building an eCommerce website difficult? – Reddit

I am an experienced dev, with more than ten years of experience, and I’ve dabbled in most web languages, with a strong knowledge of PHP/JS/Node. I’ve worked in most paradygms (OOP, functional, MVC, MVVC, MV*… ), used most CMSs, most frameworks, rolled out my own multiple times, built from small OS components or completely from scratch… I’ve built small personal pages, large community-driven ones, apps, blogs, and never an eCommerce now, I’ve avoided e-commerce websites, for reasons not relevant to this post. However, a friend is asking me to lend a hand building her website, and after carefully considering what is out there (Silverstripe Swipestripe, Drupal Ecommerce, WordPress WooCommerce, ExpressionEngine ecommerce, Prestashop, Magento, others… ), it seems to me it’s easier to build from scratch (or using a framework) rather than try to bend these behemoths to my is worrying me is that all over the web, the sentiment, even of devs more experienced than I am, seems to be that building an e-commerce website is very complex and you’re better off not rolling out your own solution. I am having deep trouble understanding why. (Sorry for the long intro, but I wanted to avoid from the get-go answers like “If you are just starting… “)TL;DR: Apart from classical security considerations that need to be implemented in any user-facing website, what makes eCommerce website development so daunting?
