Why do you need a VPN to watch Channel 4? Channel 4 is only available in the UK. This is because Channel 4’s content is geo-restricted in order to comply with UK distribution rights and copyright laws. Therefore, if you want to watch Channel 4 or the All 4 streaming service from outside the UK, you will need to use a VPN to connect to a UK server. This will then issue your device with a UK IP address, which will allow to bypass these restrictions.
If you try to access Channel 4 platforms from the US or anywhere else outside the UK without a VPN, you will get an error message saying that Channel 4 content is not available in your area.
If this happens to you, all you need to do is use a reliable VPN to connect to a server in the UK. This will make it appear as if you are in the UK, which will get around Channel 4’s region restrictions and allow you to watch Channel 4’s content.
A VPN also has the added benefit of protecting your online privacy by encrypting your data. This keeps it hidden from third parties and hackers.

Channel 4 On Demand with free VPNWhile it may be technically possible to watch Sky One with a free VPN, it is not a good idea to do so. For one thing, free VPNs are far more likely to be blocked by streaming services than reputable VPNs, so it is possible that a free VPN would not be able to bypass Channel 4’s geo-restrictions. And even if it did work, a free VPN will be a lot less secure than a paid-for one. In fact, most free VPNs make money by selling customer data to third-party sites.
A freemium is a slightly better alternative to a free VPN. This is a free version offered by some paid-for VPNs. However, these usually come with data caps and are not as good at unblocking content from major streaming services. This is hardly ideal for streaming content on Channel 4, as it probably will not work. If you want to try one out though, you could try Windscribe’s freemium offering, which has a monthly data cap of 10GB.
However, most of our favorite VPN services, such as NordVPN, Surfshark, and ExpressVPN, come with a 30-day money-back guarantee. So, if there is something specific you want to watch on Channel 4, you could sign up for one of these VPNs, use it to watch Channel 4 for a month, and then cancel your subscription and get your money back.
What can you watch on Channel 4?
Channel 4 is one of the most popular TV channels in the UK, and it boasts the largest library of free on-demand content in the country. It has lots of original content, including Gogglebox, Hollyoaks, and the critically acclaimed It’s a Sin. It is also the only place you can watch the latest series of The Great British Bake Off.
Channel 4 is also home to some of the UK’s best-loved comedy shows, such as Father Ted, The Inbetweeners, and The IT Crowd. And you will find lots of documentaries and reality TV shows to keep you entertained.
Aside from all its original content, Channel 4 also gives you access to a range of TV shows from other countries, including The Handmaid’s Tale, The West Wing, and Fargo.

How to Watch All 4 Abroad: Stream Channel 4 Outside the UK

All 4 is only available if you’re in the UK, but there is a workaround to watch it from abroad – use this method to watch new episodes of Bake Off 2021
Here’s how to catch up on all your favourite All 4 shows outside of the UK – including Bake Off
By
| 21 Sep 2021
All 4 is one of the main UK channel catch-up TV streaming services, a platform which hosts most TV shows and movies that air on the likes of Channel 4, E4, More4, Film4 and 4Music.
Like most video on-demand services, All 4 is only available to watch when you’re located within the UK borders because of the licensing issues related to the shows. That can be a problem if you’re going abroad and want to keep up with your favourite shows while you’re away, or if you live outside the UK but don’t want to miss out on some of Channel 4’s content.
Luckily, there are ways around it – so here’s how to watch All 4 (or 4oD if you simply can’t stop using the old name as we can’t) from outside the UK. This is the perfect way to catch up on new episodes of Bake Off 2021.
Watch All 4 with a VPN
By far the easiest way to access All 4 from abroad is to use a VPN (or virtual private network) which allows you to browse the internet while appearing to be in a different country to where you actually are.
There are loads of VPNs out there, though our top recommendation is NordVPN for its reliability, speed and affordability.
In fact, you can currently get 70% off NordVPN’s usual monthly price.
You can also check out our guide to the best VPNs for streaming video – our ranking of all the best VPNs we’ve tested for watching films and TV.
Once you have chosen a VPN service, simply install it onto your device – most work on PC, Mac, iOS, Android, and more. Then take the following steps:
Connect to a UK sever on your chosen VPN
Head to the All 4 website or app
Sign up for an account (it’s free, but requires your email)
Search for whichever show you wish to watch
Just remember that to watch All 4 you’ll need to turn off any ad-blockers (including any optional ad-blocking in your VPN). If you still can’t connect, try a different UK server – content providers try to block VPN traffic, so you might need to try a few different connections to find one that works.
And on that note, using such workarounds to watch is against the All 4 terms and conditions, so bear that in mind. It isn’t illegal for you to watch All 4 from abroad, but Channel 4 doesn’t like it, and there’s a small risk that it could block your account.

Channel 4 originated transmissions provide for three aspect ratios: 4:3, 16:9 that is safe for 14:9 viewing and 16:9. Using a 4:3 TV to view a 4:3 aspect ratio transmission is straight forward. When a 4:3 TV is used to view 16:9 safe for 14:9, what should happen is that the freeview box will zoom in a little to provide thin black bands top and bottom and cut a little of the sides of the picture off. This facility is intended to provide a reasonable compromise for viewers with 4:3 TVs. (14:9 is often used for analogue transmissions for the same reason) that some freeview boxes do not support this option and will produce a 16:9 letterbox display in this mode with thick black lines top and bottom, but the correct aspect ratio. A few types of box may become confused and not produce satisfactory pictures. When a 4:3 TV is used to view 16:9 programmes the pictures may be presented in one of two ways depending on the chosen option in the freeview box. Either in letterbox with thick black lines top and bottom or in centre cut out. Centre cut out enlarges the centre of the 16:9 image to fill the 4:3 screen and in so doing cuts off the sides of the picture. Note that some shows which are a mixture of 16:9 and 4:3 have to present the 4:3 with an area of black each side of the screen. If this is being watched in letterbox on a 4:3 TV, this will result in an area of black all around the image. E4 is transmitted with a different resolution setting from boxes can give unexpected results as a result of this. If you are able to compare results/settings with friends and neighbours it may be helpful.

When casting content, the video playing on your HDTV is not the downloaded file – for Google Chromecast, the video must be streamed and as our restrictions do not allow streaming All 4 content abroad, the video will be unable to cast (although you are still able to view downloads on your device). Rights agreements mean that our All 4 service is only available in the UK. Even if you are a citizen of the UK you cannot access the service from abroad. Some of our programmes are available in the Republic of Ireland, subject to rights. The Popout player may be used as an alternative to fullscreen. Selecting the “large size” button will scale the player window to its maximum available size. This view, unlike fullscreen, is fully keyboard accessible and therefore can also be used via voice activation keystroke commands.

Not necessarily, but usually. As well as an HDTV, it needs to have an HD decoder built-in, (or an external set top box) that can receive the HD signals and a TV service offering high-definition programmes, many of which are free. There was a confusing period in the late 2000’s where many TV’s said they were “HD Ready” but you need to check that they can decode an HD broadcast. If they can’t you may need an extra set-top-box.
Audio description on Freeview makes use of two audios. The first is the normal stereo programme sound that all viewers use. The second audio carries only mono audio description which has mix control data associated with it. It is likely you are receiving the audio description service. A Netgem Freeview box makes use of the above to produce a fully mixed stereo audio which incorporates the audio description for blind viewers. As a result of recent feedback from viewers, it has become apparent that there are some Freeview receivers that are able to select the second audio channel as a multi-language option. Note that although obviously in English, this second audio is not suitable for use by itself as it provides only audio description and should be deselected thereby negating the problem. If the above does not help, you will need to contact whoever supplies your signal and they should be able to help.
No, to watch full-length programmes via the All 4 service or video clips, you have to use the HTML5 Player
If you are watching a downloaded episode on your Android device and you initiate a cast session, then it will be the streamed version of the episode which will play out on the Google Cast device. Casting a downloaded episode will be subject to the streamed version having the appropriate rights for play back on Goggle Chromecast.
