NAS Pensacola newspaper Gosport closes its doors after 98 …
After telling Naval Air Station Pensacola’s story for the last 98 years, the final edition of the Gosport newspaper hit classrooms, barracks and mess halls this morning. Stopping the newspaper’s production was tough call, said Jason Bortz, the base spokesman. “It was extremely hard. My goal was to make it to the 100-year mark, ” said Bortz, who made the decision to end the Gosport when the Navy’s contract with its outside publisher expired this month. Extending the contract, which included two employees and printing 25, 000 papers, didn’t make financial sense for the publisher, Bortz explained. The company relied on advertising revenue, and Gosport advertisers weren’t reaching the approximately 60, 000 18- to 22-year-olds who train at the base, he said. Meet the base’s executive officer:’I love this place’: Pensacola native returns to lead base’s enlisted sailorsThe base’s public information department is moving its message online via social media. “Navy message will continue, it will change forms, ” he said. Longtime Gosport Managing Editor Mike O’Connor likened the newspaper to the airplanes constantly flying overhead the base headquarters office. “It is like the planes you hear above us, the Navy is transitioning to a new air frame but the mission will continue, ” he said. End of an eraA Gosport is a voice tube used by flight instructors in the early days of naval aviation, explained Hill Goodspeed, historian at the National Naval Aviation newspaper didn’t adopt the fitting moniker until around 1936. Before that, the newspaper was named Air Station News. “This really does represent the end of an era in so many ways. I will miss it, ” said Goodspeed, who has often turned to the Gosport in his research. “It has definitely been a reflection of base culture and the military and society, ” he said. “Both the good and the bad aspects, the stories capture that history. ” A somber duty:’An honor and privilege’: Meet the 19 sailors who conduct funeral honors at BarrancasOne of the earliest papers in the museum’s collection is the July 5, 1923, Air Station News. The newspaper describes a wedding in which the bride groom “proceeded to do a honeymoon in very modern style. (The bride and groom) boarded his F-boat at Saunders Beach and flew to New Orleans. “Although the museum has a large collection of old Gosports in its archives, it does not have a complete collection. Goodspeed said the base lost the complete newspaper archive during Hurricane Ivan in 2004 and has relied on donations of old Gosports from community members to try to reconstruct the archive. Goodspeed encouraged anyone with old editions of the Gosport that they would like to donate to contact the museum. Fighting the good fightArt Giberson led the Gosport from 1977 through 2001 after retiring from the berson, a Vietnam veteran who served as chief photographer on the USS Oriskany, said he fought during his tenure to ensure the Gosport’s editorial independence from Navy. “When I was the managing editor, it was a civilian enterprise, the (base) commanding officer did not have editorial control, ” said Giberson, who recalled a dispute with a commander over his decision to write a story about a squadron commander being cited for driving under the influence. When I retired, I think that made a few people happy, ” he said. In recent years, the newspaper has operated under the base’s public affairs office and editorial control has shifted. Seeing the Gosport go away hurts, Giberson said. “It wouldn’t hurt quite so much if that had been able to make it 100, ” he said. Dig Through History:Experts repair sections of historic Battery San Antonio at Pensacola Naval Air StationHighlights during Giberson’s tenure included visits by former Presidents Jimmy Carter, George H. W. Bush and George W. Giberson said the biggest news story during his time was Hurricane Frederic. Although the Gosport’s printing presses in downtown Pensacola were beginning to flood, Giberson scrambled to get a paper out and beat the Pensacola News Journal and other local media to have the first photos of destruction at Naval Air Station Pensacola back in 1979. Most meaningful to Giberson were connections with fellow Vietnam veterans. He recalled meeting Medal of Honor recipient Leonard Keller. Keller, an Army veteran, was quietly working as a civilian in the supply department at Naval Air Station Whiting Field and had not shared his story through the media. Giberson convinced Keller to allow him to tell his story in the Gosport. “He said that if he had to tell me what Vietnam was like, I wouldn’t understand. I told him that I had made three deployments to Vietnam. After I told him that, he suggested we get coffee, ” Giberson said. “Before that, I don’t think anyone on the base even knew he had the Medal of Honor. ” Saying goodbyeO’Connor put the final edition of the Gosport to bed Thursday. “I want to see it safely become a part of history, ” said O’Connor, who has been with the paper in various roles since 2005. Highlights during his tenure have included visits by Presidents Barack Obama and Donald Trump, coverage of relief efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and the 2010 BP oil spill. He recalled interviewing Apollo astronaut Gene Cernan, the last man to walk on the moon. “Gene always treated the Gosport like we were Time Magazine, ” he said. Along with producing the Gosport, O’Connor and fellow Gosport staffer Kaitlyn Peacock have mentored countless young sailors in public affairs. The duo joke that their office was “The Cradle of Naval Public Affairs. ” O’Connor said would-be aviators occasionally got routed to the office when they had issues in flight training. Many found public affairs wasn’t for them, but some were a terrific fit. Dressing the Blue Angels:Longtime Blue Angels tailor plans to retire after finishing final flight suitA former flight student who failed night instrumentation discovered a love for photography after working at the Gosport and embarked on a successful career as a Navy photographer. Among the items O’Connor prepared to remove as the Gosport readied to shut its doors was a thank you card from a Navy public affairs officer who trained at the Gosport. “I will always cherish my time as Gosport writer, ” the note stated. Whenever the Navy selects one of the sailors to enter its public affairs pipeline, it is a victory for the Gosport team, O’Connor said. “That is a big win for all us, ” said O’Connor who has helped to train 10 people who are currently working as Navy public affairs officers. Bortz said the office decided to say goodbye to the Gosport without a lot fanfare because the team wanted the public to know that it will continue to strive to put out the base’s messages, just not in the same format. “As far as the Gosport, we had a standard that we wanted to keep and we decided we couldn’t do that publishing on our own.
